October 25th- So This Is Van Life!

As of Sunday (the 21st), we can officially call our new van our home! We sprung from the nest (thanks a million Barrie, Shana, Stephen and Asha, we had an amazing time!) and have been travelling around the Blue Mountains region. We're sticking around the national park as we find our camping legs and are enjoying getting into the swing of van living.

Our journey so far!

To be honest, our route planning skills aren't quite there yet, we are bouncing around a little bit and back tracking rather than doing everything in sequence, but it's been fun so we're not complaining!

After we left Sydney, we drove to Old Ford Reserve in Megalong valley and set up camp there for 3 nights. It was a beautiful, small camp ground with fire pits down a long snaking road that boasted spectacular views.

Matt the photographer taking some snaps of our campground neighbours.

It was admittedly a bit far from any towns or attractions so we found ourselves with a lot of spare time in the afternoon/evenings after we returned (before dusk to avoid hitting kangaroos!). From this spot, we drove up into Blackheath on our first day and did a hike from through the Grand Canyon (no, the other Grand Canyon!), which was spectacular and hot, though Holly did manage to cool off after falling into a river chasing down her lens cap!

The view from Evans Lookout.

Gumtrees for as far as the eye can see!

Meeting some locals along the path.

Can't help but feel like we're on the set of Jurassic Park.

The next day we headed to Katoomba, a beautiful town known for the Three Sisters. We took in the views then did groceries, which we've made into a sport chasing down all the reduced items (90% off $0.35 swiss rolls anyone?), before heading back and soaking up the (rare) sun and lizard spotting.

The Three Sisters

This view will never get old.

This fella came and sunned himself right beside Matt, guess he saw some
similarities!

Next day we headed off to Lithgow, another pretty town. We stopped into a Tourist Information Centre and asked around for things to do on a cold day (not joking, the Australian sun is a lie!) and the lady suggested we go see the glowworm caves. We thought that sounded pretty cool and decided to give it a go! The lady had said it was an hour drive and along a gravel road, but we should be fine. After stopping off briefly at a gun emplacement (Holly's idea obviously), we drove up to the "gravel road" leading to the glowworm caves. What we ended up driving along for 2 hours was not a gravel road, it was a series of potholes strung together, making for a very slow and bumpy ride! After this gruelling drive, which lost all novelty after about 30 minutes, we took a short walk into a cave and saw the glowworms... for all of 2 minutes! While the glowworms were very cool, we both agree it was not worth the stress and back pain from the drive, tourists beware! Running late from the drive and worried about finding a campsite in time for dusk, we pulled into Mt. York Campground, had a quick dinner and shut ourselves away as it was cold and rainy. We were very thankful for Netflix downloads and soup that night!

Our trip went off with a bang!

The next day we set off towards Jenolan and Boyd River Campground. Unsure of what we were doing and where we were going, we stopped off in Oberon, a lovely small town! We have currently set up camp in the library and are looking up where to head next and get in touch with everyone, thankful for the free WiFi!
