August 7th - It Begins!

After a lovely drive up to Montreal, we finally get started on our great adventure! Despite a minor hiccup at the airport (no wifi UGHH), we said our goodbyes and awaited our flight to Iceland. In true French Canadian fashion, this involved several unannounced gate changes and an hours delay, but in the end we made it.

Arriving in Iceland, a series of thoughts went through our heads. As we groggily shuffled off the plane, we wondered how we had convinced ourselves a 10 hour layover was a good idea. Next, as we left the airport, we were struck once again by the desolate beauty of Iceland's landscape.

Brimming with excitement, we began the hour's walk into the nearest town, Keflavik. Lastly, as we arrived and felt the frigid wind blow in off the sea, we came full circle as we questioned why we had thought it a good idea to ever leave the relative comfort of the airport in the first place.

To top it all off, we arrived at 6:00 am and, as we quickly discovered, nothing opens in Iceland until 11:00 am at the earliest so there was no refuge in sight. Tired and cold, we wandered along the cliffs, bracing against the ocean spray, hoping someone would take pity on a couple of haggard Canadians. Finally, at the end of the harbour we saw a house with a familiar face smiling from the window! Thankfully, we ran and were welcomed into the warmth of her home...

Meet Giganta, a popular fairy tale
character from Icelandic Folklore!
Matt feeling smaller than usual.

We bid Giganta fairwell and braved the elements once again. After a bit more sightseeing, we made our way back to the airport. Hiking back along the trail we amused ourselves with a bit of bird watching, admiring the fowls hiding in the grass and the rocks.

Can you spot the bird?

As we approached the airport, we managed to spot a pair of these beauties flying overhead.

Matt takes bird watching to a whole new level!

And so here we are, waiting again at Keflavik airport for the next phase of our adventure to begin! More to come!
